One of them was NTR Lab whose cofounder and CEO Nick Mikhailovky told me all sorts of interesting stories about neutral networks when I first met him in his office in Moscow in 2003.

Millions of users of Maps@Mail.ru, the major mapping service in Russia, will see POIdo geocontext ads

Russia’s leading internet portal Mail.ru became the first Russian web resource displaying geocontext ads. POIdo ads will be shown in Maps@Mail.ru, a mapping service providing data about road traffic in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other big Russian cities.

The new geocontext advertising service is a perfect fit for the mainstream business audience. POIdo ads are equally useful for both large companies with numerous locations and small businesses serving local clients, such as shops, cafes and car washes.

Geocontext advertising is especially lucrative for small businesses that lack large advertising budgets. Advertisers register and then launch ad campaigns by establishing virtual billboards on a map of the city and adjusting ad display range and price per view. Moreover, advertisers can limit the time the ad displays and choose what to pay for: view, click, call or coupon.

The geocontext nature of POIdo ads means the user of Maps@Mail.ru would only see an ad if it corresponds to her interests and is located within her area of interest. As a result, the user treats these ads as a free value-added service instead of considering them spam. For example, a user can see a list of nail salons in a given part of the city.

“Integration of POIdo with Maps@Mail.ru is a key step in the development of geocontext advertising in Russia,” — says Nick Mikhailovsky, POIdo CEO, “Two to three million ads shown each day are significant even for Russia’s most prominent advertisers. As for the cost, it still remains sufficiently lower than that of traditional promotion methods. Agreement of POIdo and Mail.ru is a breakthrough of geocontext advertising establishing a bright outlook for the very concept of location-based advertising.”

Mail.ru provides a new service to advertisers; integrating geocontext advertising into its offerings is yet more proof of its technological leadership.

Moscow /Tomsk, July 9, 2010.
Special Economic Zones (SEZs) were first established in Russia in 2005 to gather clusters of the most advanced high-tech companies and to promote innovations. SEZs provide buildings and other infrastructure, incentives and concessions to the carefully selected companies. Overall, there are 16 SEZs in Russia, of which only 5 are for Technical Innovation: Tomsk, Zelenograd, Dubna, Neudorf and Novo-Orlovskoye.

Resident status for Tomsk Special Economic Zone will provide POIdo with far more opportunities for business development via access to the newest technologies, international contacts and other opportunities.

Nick Mikhailovsky, CEO of POIdo, said: “While we have traditionally enjoyed government support, this is the first manifest of the new course of the Russian Federal Govt. to support innovation that brings practical result for us”.

POIdo is a pay-per-action location-based advertising (LBA) platform providing ads targeted to users’ precise location, context and behavior in applications on both mobile phones and internet sites.

March 16, 2010. Moscow, Russia. POIdo (www.poido.ru), the first location-based advertising (LBA) service in Russia, successfully launched today. The platform is based on a patent-pending technology of Geocontext auctions: advertisers compete for ad lots, since a user sees only the most efficient ads on a given field.

POIdo is specifically designed to provide cost-effective, virtual advertising to small, local businesses. The user sees the ad message within the application in use when approaching a virtual billboard or as a result of searching for a nearby address. As a result, users accept the ads as a value-added free service instead of considering them spam.

POIdo provides API for both advertisers and publishers, enabling development of innovative applications with location-aware monetization/advertising built in.

Nick Mikhailovsky, POIdo CEO, says: “Our initial roll out is the Moscow, Russia market. However, as the system evolves and the number of locations expands local advertisers in other countries will be able to address their target customers more efficiently.”

About POIdo
